SWIM Plan Updates: 2015 – 2017

The Northwest Florida Water Management District is developing updated Surface Water Improvement and Management (SWIM) plans for each of the seven major watersheds in the Florida panhandle. This will be accomplished with grant funding from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Project Scope:

The objective of this effort is to develop updated SWIM plans for each of northwest Florida’s major watersheds:

  1. Perdido River and Bay
  2. Pensacola Bay System
  3. Choctawhatchee River and Bay
  4. St. Andrew Bay
  5. Apalachicola River and Bay
  6. Ochlockonee River and Bay
  7. St. Marks River and Apalachee Bay

The overall schedule for development is October 2015 through September 2017. Draft SWIM plans will be available for public review during the summer of 2017, with Governing Board consideration scheduled for the fall of 2017.

The scope of the effort is defined into four general tasks:

  1. Technical advisory committees will be engaged for each watershed to help define issues, develop goals and objectives, identify and prioritize strategies and projects, and assist in development and review of plan documents.
  2. Public outreach and engagement will include public workshops within each watershed and online review.
  3. Priority projects will be defined to achieve goals and objectives established for each watershed.
  4. Updated plans will be completed for each watershed, to include goals, operational objectives, and priority projects.

These tasks may progress concurrently.
