Tates Hell – Doyle Creek

Tates Hell – Doyle Creek Mitigation Area / Apalachicola River and Bay Watershed / Franklin County / Legacy ID – UWRMP 5.5.2

Implemented in 2006, the goal of this project is the restoration, enhancement and long-term ecological management of wetlands within the Doyle Creek drainage of western Tates Hell State Forest.  Approximately 18,000 feet of logging roads and associated ditching have been eliminated by pushing road-fill back into the adjacent ditches and grading to natural, pre-disturbance elevations.  The road footprint (~25 acres) has been revegetated with appropriate wetland species (cypress / wiregrass).  Low-water crossings were installed at three points to facilitate hydrologic enhancement.  The mitigation site will be managed by DOF in perpetuity for habitat restoration and ecological integrity, including implementation of appropriate fire regime, in accordance with the DOF Tates Hell State Forest management plan.  Appropriate BMPs (e.g., silt fences, etc) were used during construction phases.  This project was implemented to offset wetland impacts associated with SR 65 (from US 98 to Franklin/Liberty County line).
