Bellamy Bridge Heritage Trail
In August 2012, the District entered into an agreement with Jackson County to develop the Bellamy Bridge Heritage Trail on District land along the Chipola River to enhance public access to the historic and cultural site.
History
The historic Bellamy Bridge was built in 1851. It was swept away by a flood, built again in 1874, then re-built in 1914. It is the second oldest steel-framed bridge in Florida. It is one of the ten oldest bridges in the state. The Bellamy Bridge remained in use until 1963 when it was declared obsolete and replaced by a concrete bridge by which County Road 162 crosses the Chipola River today.
The Bellamy Bridge is not accessible by car, but can be reached via the 1/2 mile Bellamy Bridge Heritage Trail on Highway 162, north of Marianna. The trail parking area is 1/10th of a mile west of the current Chipola River bridge. The trail is open during daylight hours.
